About OpenGems
OpenGems turns public data into citeable gems — small, sourced objects that agents and people can both use without a detour through agency portals.
Mission
Public data is open, but rarely usable. Series hide behind forms, formats drift, and numbers lose their source the moment they are copied. OpenGems values that data up: every gem carries its source, retrieval time, vintage, and license, so whatever you build on it stays honest.
Who it is for
Agents
Tool-calling clients and MCP hosts that need typed JSON with provenance, stable URLs, and fair rate limits — the same objects a human sees.
Humans
Researchers, journalists, civic technologists, and analysts who want a fast brief, a chart to embed, or a number to cite.
How to use it
- Start at StatsThe portal. Browse reports by agency — Census, BLS, FRED, HUD — or by topic.
- Go local in PlacesCity hubs gather civic gems, such as what San Francisco tenants actually pay.
- Cite or embedEvery report has a source link, a data table, and an embed snippet that links back.
- Wire an agentRead llms.txt, call the JSON endpoints, and send an
X-OpenGems-Agentheader.
Why trust it
OpenGems is snapshot-honest. Fixtures and snapshots are labelled as such, and we never imply live national coverage we have not shipped. Scores are transparent recipes you can audit, not black-box indexes. OpenGems is not a government agency and is not affiliated with one.
OpenGems is a product of Awestruck Innovations LLC. Partnerships, licensing, or higher agent limits — we read every note.
